A trip to New York City

New York, concrete jungle where dreams are made of, there's nothing you can't do
Why is this so true

I am no travel blogger at all, I don't know the top places to visit or best places for value of money in this beautiful city, but I can share an experience.
Earlier this year, a group of about 40 from my school jumped on a virgin airways flight and headed to The Big Apple, the king of all cities - NYC

Ever since I was a child, I'd dreamed of New York (who doesn't right?). I'd watched Breakfast at Tiffany's on repeat and longed to capture the obligatory pictures of Grand Central Station and Central Park. I'd envisioned myself living like Serena Van Der Woodsen and strolling through the streets with a smile on my face and not a care in the world.

When the opportunity came to visit my dreams, I ran home with the trip letter, logged the date in my countdown calendar and month by month, I handed in envelopes of money to school that would help me tick 'Visit New York City' off my bucket list.

A wild Caitlin takes NYC

I Imagine I became annoying to anyone who spoke to me in the weeks leading up to the big day, plans of what to buy, what to photograph... I couldn't wait! Slowly but surely, the day to wake up at 4am came, I was up before my alarm, ready to take on the day of travelling! (A rare occurrence,  usually you don't see me until at least 10am)

Upon arriving at JFK airport, all 40 of us loaded our luggage into a bus (very quickly as this was New York and the cars behind the bus weren't too happy). Our tour guide was called Lyn and on our way to our hotel, she made sure we were aware of everything that surrounded us (queens, the houses, rent,   The bridges, politics... really the girl didn't stop at anything), Lyn was the first New Yorker I'd speak to and she'll have a place in my heart forever, love you Lyn<3
The bus trip was very cliche in my eyes, have you ever seen those films where they're driving into a new place or when a kid enters a toy store? That's probably what my face resembled, I was in awe. I was in New York City!!

The first thing we did when we stepped off that bus (other than run across the road to avoid death, welcome to New York) was collect our room keys, cry about the rooms (ill talk more about that later)  and head straight away to the all famous Times Square to eat at Bubba Gump.
Let me tell you, after over 24 hours of being conscious, and eating only a Pret-A-Manger sandwich because the plane food was inedible, I wasn't too chuffed to find out that I'd previously pre ordered a salad. A salad. That's what Caitlin of the past wanted for Caitlin of the future, a salad.

My first moments in NY consisted of an old hotel room, a salad, and nearly dying of tiredness. But that was never gonna get me down!! Here's a breakdown of what we did:
•Ellis island and Liberty island
•an hour or 2 in Century 21
• a visit to Wall Street
•Empire State Building
•9/11 memorial and museum
•A walk down Fifth Avenue
•lunch at the Rockefeller
•Central Park
•a walk from Central Park to our hotel (I died)
•Madison Square Garden Rangers vs Coyotes ice hockey game
•Grand Central Station at night
•United Nations tour
•Broadway, School of Rock
•One World observatory
•Ice Skating at Rockefeller
•Planet Hollywood restaurant
•Shopping!! (Macy's, avenue of the Americas, Bloomingdales)
•Hard Rock Cafe

By far the most incredible experiences were MSG, 9/11 museum and One World, or even just the buzz of the city! If you ever take a trip to the city, please please go and see a game at Madison Square Garden! The experience is like nothing else, it's on another level to our games in the UK! The enthusiasm of the fans is one you can't miss!
9/11... this museum has to be up there with the most heart breaking places. the museum is full of remenants and dedications, belongings and the history of others. The atmosphere is so quiet and unforgettable. Everyone is in shock, you truly see the devastation on another level. I adore the admiration and respect that everyone has towards the museum, memorial and the victims, it's like everyone comes together and learns the respect, young or old, you truly realise the devastation this event caused America.
One World is fairly new to the city, and I have to admit I felt abit eerie while looking and standing in the fascinating building. One World Trade Center. It is a representation and a symbol of how America has moved on in my eyes! The observatory is jaw dropping! A 360 degree, 104 story, 1776 ft high view of the famous city through glass, I could've spent hours just examining! there are many places in NYC where you can 'look down' on th city, however One World definitely supplies one worth living!

Our hotel:
Let me tell you this now, if you ever book to stay at Hotel Pennsylvania, don't expect a 5 star, super clean up to date hotel. I hardly slept if I'm honest...
The 1920s hotel, is exactly what it says on the tin, 1920s.

The hotel is very surreal and appears as if it could be in a horror movie quite frankly:)
Although if you're willing to look past that it is literally just a bed to sleep in and not much else (not even a hot shower if you decide to have a late one) then this hotel isn't that bad! Its always busy because of it's low prices and amazing location, that's pretty much all in my eyes... located on 7th Avenue this hotel is directly opposite MSG, about a 5 minute walk down to Times Square, right next to a subway station and also a couple blocks from the shops (macy's, VS, Shopping at times square). Theres also a shop in the lobby if you don't want to leave the hotel but you're hungry.
Due to our hotel being so close to Times Square, I found myself running out of money quicker than usual as I was literally shopping at 2-3am!!

If you decide to stay here, you may be lucky to land in one of the renovated rooms, although unfortunately, if you have the same luck as me, it could end up looking like this:

Best of all, the hotel is right around the corner from my favourite deli Speedy's who eventually gave us 10% off because we went there every morning for breakfast, real Speedy's love!!

There is sooo much more I could write about for New York, but this post would probably go on forever, if you have any questions then feel free to ask in the comments!! I'm so grateful to have had the chance to visit this city and I thank you for taking the time to read and support my blog :-)

Picture spam!!

Happy New Year everyone!!!
(if youd like to see a New York haul, let me know in the comments, or Instagram!)

Product review: ABH Glow Kit Moon Child

What better way to restart your blog than a product review? Caitlin's back from her MIA period wow!
How was everyone's Christmas? Mine was sooo chilled out and I definitely enjoyed it! Even though Christmas is all about family and friends and being thankful, I HAVE to share some of my presents with the world;-) Dont worry I'm not sponsored (come on I have 3 followers why would I be sponsored) this is merely for fun and entirely my opinion - because as you will get to know soon, I have a sliiiight obsession to highlighters, and what's better than getting 6 highlighters in 1! (Anastasia Beverly Hills you won my heart with that creation, fab idea, I salute you)

Anyway, as you may have noticed (even though I'm slightly late with this trend) early this year, Anastasia Beverly Hills glow kits sent the whole world on a craze and it was near impossible to get your hands on one, in fact if they were food, I probably would've starved to death... I was always jealous of anyone who had one! They were sold out all the time and I thought that I'd be able to get one on my trip to New York(comment if you'd like a travel post:-)) but, unfortunately they were all sold out in Sephora.

All in all there are 5 glow kits (correct me if I'm wrong) and the Moon child palette in my opinion is the more editorial makeup product, with a range of blue and purple tones, they're not your typical everyday highlighters but they are the perfect mix between fantasy and reality. If you're looking to step out of your comfort zone, or take up editorial makeup it is definitely the one.

With thanks to my Second family who had taken a trip to Florida this year, I woke up Christmas morning to this hyped Anastasia Beverly Hills Moon child palette, with my name on shiny wrapping paper!

I have to admit, packaging is a big thing for myself, and the packaging on Anastasia Beverly Hills product never fails to look and feel luxury! The Moonchild palette has a duo chrome, rainbow effect on a lovely light blue colour and definitely doesn't make you feel bad about spending £39.

What the website says:

Magically-Metallic highlighters that offer a celestial skin finish. Layer shades of Anastasia Beverly Hills Glow Kit, together or sweep them separately on face, eyes and body for a kaleidoscopic, shimmering effect. Ideal for use with Brush #23. For a brightly amplified glow, apply with a damp makeup brush or sponge.

I couldn't agree more, who doesn't want to look magic? Ummm me please! But how wearable are these colours...

As you can see, each shade has its own colour to wow you with, but how does the public react to someone with purple cheeks? Personally, I wore the shade 'star' on Boxing Day, which appears to be a silver, metallic shade. Let me tell you, I wore that shade with complete confidence! That is until my dad called me pale and my Nan rubbed at my nose to remove the 'grey mark'...
Let me warn you to not go overboard on these shades, you may get your nose rubbed.

Now please don't take this as me dissing the palette,  because I'm definitely not, I love it very much and still continue to use it, however it can look 'childish' or a bit weird if you don't take care!

The shades from left to right: blue ice, star, purple horseshoe, pink heart, lucky clover, blue moon

Review of the shades

Blue ice-

What Anastasia says:  Diamond white with an icy blue reflect
What Caitlin says: This is one of my favourite shades from the palette, as it can look natural and      wearable while still appearing unique, it doesn't look chalky and has that wet sheen that I love, 8/10 from me!

Star-

What Anastasia says: A moonstone fusion of mint, platinum and silver reflect
What Caitlin says: After my bad experience with this shade, I've not really used it, however i imagine it would be lovely for an editorial look, or maybe a night out! Its formula is slightly more chalky than the others and I found that it doesn't last as long.

Purple horseshoe-

What Anastasia says: A glittering lavender with an arctic blue reflect
What Caitlin says:  This is definitely one the colours that makes this palette truly standout or, however I've not yet used it on my cheekbones! I reached for this while doing a halo eye look, and I swiped it in the centre of my lid, and I have to say I fell in love!

Pink heart-

What Anastasia says:  Pearl white with a pink opal reflect
What Caitlin says: Personally, this is my favourite shade in the palette and the most wearable, it's more like other highlighters in my opinion and gives a lovely pink sheen, definitely my most used!

Lucky clover-

What Anastasia says:  A shamrock-infused gold with canary yellow diamond reflect
What Caitlin says:  I'm not a huge fan of the emerald colours, however I have to say this is a stunning highlighter if it compliments your skin tone, even though I haven't used it very much I'd definitely reach for it in the future.

Blue moon-

What Anastasia says: Frozen blue with a silver reflect
What Caitlin says: Again like purple horseshoe, this shade is definitely a bold one, if you like blue ice and are looking for something more opaque this is the on! I've also used this in a halo eye look and  adored it.

This palette is a great confidence booster, and definitely represents a daring choice. If you're looking for something to slowly take you out of your comfort zone, this breathtaking celestial palette is worth every penny!

Top 6 Real Techniques brushes

Real techniques are one of my favourite brands of drugstore makeup brushes, and these are just a few of the brushes I use everyday! Just in case you didn't know, Real techniques were designed by professional makeup artists Sam + Nic Chapman and they combine high-tech materials (they're al synthetic) with innovative design to make creating you're makeup look easier than ever! The color-coded system corresponds to the key steps of makeup application so you can create a flawless base, enchanced eyes and the perfect finish and look pixel perfect. The collection is available in Boots and Superdrug and if you're in the states then I'm not entirely sure but you can get them online! if you want to know more then just go to realtechniques.com

Unfortunately, I don't own any of the Bold Metals collection, but i'm sure they're amazing! Please excuse how dirty my brushes are haha!
so here are my top 6-

1. Duo-fiber face brush

Personally, i'm not a big fan of blush, but this brush is super fluffy and soft and because it doesn't pick up too much product, it's perfect for me! Also you could use it for so many things, like bronzer or powder. This brush is available in the Nic's picks set!

2. Cheek brush

Even though it's called the cheek brush, I use this brush for foundation, because it is soo dense and it lightly buffs everything into place and creates a flawless but light finish! Definitely in with my favourites! This is also available in the Nic's picks set!

3. Deluxe crease brush

When it comes to early mornings, I don't really bother with eyeshadow,  but if I do, I chuck on some Clinique chubby stick or a Maybelline colour tattoo, and blend it with this brush and it instantly looks like I've tried! This brush has saved me so many times and it definitely deserved a mention! I think I got this brush in the Starter kit!

4. Angled shadow brush

Also from the Nic's picks set, this brush is fantastic and blending and building eyeshadow in the crease because it fits perfectly! it takes time to get it perfect but it honestly does the job perfectly!

5. Accent brush

This brush is great for creating a more dramatic eye, as it can be used to go over eyeliner, or create more definition in the crease. It's also great for applying eyeshadow on the lower lashline as it's small and dense! This is from the Starter kit aswell!

6. Contour brush

Last but certainly not least is the contour brush. This was one of the first brushes I got for this brand, in the Core collection set, and honestly I can say it's one of my favourites! It's sooo soft and it contours perfectly because it fit right into the hollows of your cheeks with the dome shape. And it can be used for so much, for example, blending concealer, applying blush, and loads more!

I love you<3

Whats in my bag?

So I apologise that this isn't a video, but I'm not quite ready for the whole Youtube thing yet! Anyway, the other night, I slept over my best friends house (shoutout to Nia if you're reading even though you're probably not), and when I got home, I was thinking of what to post next and as I was emptying my handbag I had a brainstorm and thought.. 'why not show you what I carry around?'.
If you're anything like me and you're nosy, then i'm sure you'll enjoy this post!;-)

My bag is from Very.com and it was around £25 but I'm not entirely sure (sorry!!) It's quite small, but you can fit quite a lot in there!:-)

So clearly i'm not the most organised when it comes to my handbag.. but here I go...

Here are a few random bits, like the dust bag for my dance shoes, that I was too lazy too take out! That is the main reason that's in there! Then I've got a random leaflet that this lovely lady gave me in a French vintage shop (this was ages ago, which shows how rarely I clean out this bag). And of course a Mcdonalds Monopoly sticker.. no comment there.

Then theres some essentials like a garnier invisicool deodorant, which wouldn't usually be in there, but is at the moment because of the sleepover... Of course I carry my huge makeup bag with me! (comment if you'd like and updated post of whats in there) and my holy grail lip balm -  Burts Bees. I can guarantee that if you were to ever see me in person, i'd be either wearing, or carrying this lip balm! And then of course I have a perfume just to be prepared!

So usually my beats pill isn't in here, but it just goes too show how much you can actually fit in this bag! Ignore the extremely dirty Clinique mirror... and all my keyrings!

As you can see, i'm a slight germophobe and always carry a hand sanitizer.. this particular one is from Bath and body works and its called 'Honolulu sun'. Then I've got my favourite La Roche-Posay Effaclar do+, which can I add is the BEST imperfections cream for me! The watch is a Michael Kors chronograph rose gold MK-5314 which retails for about £160-£250. And a pen which always comes in handy!

I found a few random beauty bits, floating at the bottom of my bag so i'll list them!
  • Mac lustre lipstick in plumful
  • Mac lipliner in half red
  • Eos Lip balm in strawberry sorbet and summer fruits
so thanks for  reading, and I hope you enjoyed that little insight on whats usually in my bag! comment below what you'd like to see next

I love you <3
